Program Development & Management

In addition to his independent work as writer and producer, Mark has led teams of writers, producers and sound engineers in a variety of places. In some cases these were limited-term projects, such as his coverage of the Olympics in 1994 and 1996. In others he was brought in to develop regularly scheduled programming from scratch, devising budgets, hiring staff and determining the sound and feel of new programming.

From 2004 to 2006, Mark was Executive Producer for News, Talk and Sports Programming at XM Radio. He was the founding producer for “The Bob Edwards Show” and helped build XM's public radio channel. He also developed new programming across XM's news/talk/sports suite of channels, working with independent producers and potential corporate partners around the country.  XM went from 100 channels to 160 channels during Mark's tenure, virtually all of that growth on the news/sports/talk platform.

From 2000 to 2001 Mark was Senior Producer of NPR's “Weekend Edition Sunday,” where he held responsibility for show content and directed a staff of 8 reporters, producers and editors. He previously served as Senior Editor of the program. Earlier in his NPR career, Mark achieved Senior Producer status on NPR's "Morning Edition," where he was responsible for developing and producing long-term special projects.

Mark also has wide experience as a short-term troubleshooter and consultant for programming that may be between hosts or regular show producers. In that capacity he has done stints ranging in length from several weeks to several months for programs including NPR’s “Anthem,” “Performance Today,” “Weekend Edition Sunday,” and “Weekly Edition.” He has also provided editorial advice for numerous internet based startups, including Freshwav.com, and 100%Sports.com.
